Free math placement test: find your student’s exact level (grades 6 to pre-calc)
By Michael Rainwater, updated April 2026.
One of the most common problems I see is a student working at the wrong level. A rising ninth grader signs up for Algebra I with gaps in ratios and proportional reasoning left over from sixth grade. A sophomore struggles in Geometry because they never fully learned to solve multi-step equations, and the geometry itself is fine. What they're being taught assumes a foundation nobody built.
That's why I made the Rainwater Private Tutoring Adaptive Math Placement Assessment. It’s a free online diagnostic that finds where a student stands, from Grade 6 math through Pre-Calculus, aligned entirely to the Georgia Standards of Excellence.
How the adaptive assessment works
A traditional math test asks everyone the same questions at one difficulty level. This one adapts to the student as they go. It starts at a level based on the student’s current grade and moves from there.
- Five questions per level. The student answers five questions aligned to one course level, for example Grade 7 Mathematics or Coordinate Algebra.
- Performance decides the next step. If the student shows mastery, the assessment moves up to the next course. If they struggle, it moves down to find where the gaps begin.
- It keeps going until it finds the boundaries. The assessment adapts until it has mapped both the top of what the student has mastered and the point where gaps first appear.
So no two students take the same test. A student working above grade level gets pushed into higher content. A student who has fallen behind isn’t buried in material they aren’t ready for; the assessment goes looking for the point where their understanding breaks down.
What the assessment covers
It spans middle and high school math as the Georgia Standards of Excellence lay it out:
- Grade 6 Mathematics: ratios, rates, expressions, equations, geometry, and statistics
- Grade 7 Mathematics: proportional relationships, operations with rational numbers, and probability
- Grade 8 Mathematics: linear relationships, functions, the Pythagorean Theorem, and transformations
- Coordinate Algebra: linear and exponential functions, systems of equations, and statistical analysis
- Analytic Geometry: similarity, congruence, right triangle trigonometry, circles, and quadratics
- Advanced Algebra: polynomial, rational, and radical functions, exponential and logarithmic relationships
- Pre-Calculus: trigonometric functions, sequences and series, vectors, and limits
Every question is written to the specific standards and the kind of reasoning they ask for. It isn’t a generic quiz pulled from a question bank. It’s built to tell you something you can act on.
What you get: instant, personalized results
Results arrive the moment the assessment ends, with no email step and no paywall. The report includes:
- The student’s current functional math level: the level they are performing at, which may not be their grade level
- Strengths the assessment found
- Gaps, and the course levels where they appear
- What the student is ready to learn next, and which foundational skills need work first
It’s the same kind of diagnostic data I use at the start of every private tutoring engagement. Any family can get it free, from home, whenever they like.
Why this matters
Math is cumulative. An unfound gap, even one from two or three years ago, makes every course after it harder, and the longer it goes undiagnosed the worse that gets. Students rarely “catch up” on their own. Someone has to find the gap, name it, and plan how to close it.
This assessment does the finding and naming. What comes next is the family’s call: targeted self-study, a conversation with a teacher, or a private tutor who builds a plan around the results.
