Free Chemistry assessment: Georgia standards of excellence diagnostic

By Michael Rainwater, updated April 2026.

Chemistry is where a lot of high school students hit a wall for the first time. The material is abstract, the math shows up in unfamiliar ways, and the vocabulary is dense. Students who sailed through biology can be struggling within the first few weeks. They haven’t lost any ability; chemistry asks for a different kind of thinking, and the course moves fast enough that small gaps compound quickly.

The Rainwater Private Tutoring Introductory Chemistry Assessment is a free diagnostic that shows where a student stands across all of high school chemistry, aligned to the Georgia Standards of Excellence (SC1 through SC6). It’s useful for a student in chemistry now and falling behind, one taking it next semester, or one reviewing for an end-of-course exam.

What the assessment covers

The diagnostic spans the six standard areas the Georgia Standards of Excellence set for introductory chemistry:

  • SC1, Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table. Atomic models, electron configurations, periodic trends (electronegativity, ionization energy, atomic radius), and how the layout of the periodic table reflects the properties of the elements.
  • SC2, Chemical Bonding. Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding; Lewis dot structures; molecular geometry; polarity; and intermolecular forces. Many students first run into trouble here, because bonding takes both conceptual understanding and spatial reasoning.
  • SC3, Chemical Reactions. Classifying reaction types (synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, combustion), balancing equations, and predicting products.
  • SC4, Stoichiometry and the Mole Concept. The standard that gives the most students the most trouble. Mole conversions, molar mass, percent composition, empirical and molecular formulas, and stoichiometry with limiting reactants and percent yield.
  • SC5, Gas Laws. Boyle’s Law, Charles’s Law, Gay-Lussac’s Law, the Combined Gas Law and the Ideal Gas Law, tested both as ideas about how gases behave and as equations to apply.
  • SC6, Solutions, Acids, and Bases. Solubility, concentration calculations, the pH scale, properties of acids and bases, and neutralization reactions.

How it works

The assessment is online and free. Students answer questions from all six standard areas, and the tool scores each standard separately as well as giving an overall result. That breakdown is what makes it useful. A student who has mastered stoichiometry but struggles with bonding needs a different study plan from one who understands bonding but can’t apply the gas law equations, and the diagnostic tells those two apart.

The questions are written to the depth and rigor of the Georgia Standards of Excellence, with nothing simplified. The point is an accurate picture of what the student knows and can do, even when that picture isn’t flattering.

Instant results and a personalized report

Results arrive the moment the student finishes. The report breaks performance down by standard area and shows:

  • Which standards the student has mastered
  • Which show partial understanding, and where the gaps are
  • Which need substantial review or reteaching
  • Where focused study will produce the most improvement

It costs nothing and needs no login.

Who should take this assessment

  • Students in high school chemistry now who want to find their gaps before a unit test, midterm or final
  • Students taking chemistry next semester or next year who want to know what foundation they already have and what they still need
  • Students considering AP Chemistry who should confirm they have a solid command of the introductory material first
  • Students working with a tutor who want a structured starting point

Every tutoring plan I write starts from a diagnostic, because teaching has to begin where the student is, which is often not where the syllabus says they should be. This assessment gives any family the same starting point, whether or not they ever work with a tutor.
