What to Ask Before Hiring a Private SAT Tutor in North Atlanta

Private SAT tutoring is a real investment, and the North Atlanta market has a wide range of quality at a similar price point. The difference between an effective tutor and an expensive one is usually visible before you hire, if you ask the right questions. This is the list we would want a family to use, including on us.

A note on the spirit of this page. The questions below are not phrased to lead you toward a particular answer. They are the questions that genuinely separate targeted preparation from generic instruction, and a strong tutor will welcome them. If a provider becomes vague or defensive when asked these, that itself is the answer.

The Five Questions That Actually Matter

1. “How do you decide what to work on with my child specifically?”

Listen for whether the answer describes a diagnostic process or a curriculum. “We start with a full diagnostic to find exactly where the points are being lost, then build the plan from that” is a precision answer. “We have a proven program that covers everything” is a volume answer. For a capable student who has already harvested the obvious gains, the volume answer predicts a plateau, because it spends most of the time on material the student already knows. This is the difference our no-assumption diagnostic is built around, and it is the single most predictive question on this list.

2. “Is it the same instructor every session, and is that the person who built the plan?”

Continuity is not a nicety. The value of one-on-one preparation compounds when the instructor carries a precise model of how this specific student thinks and where they slip. A rotating roster, or a plan designed by one person and delivered by another, discards exactly that compounding. There is a real structural reason this matters, which we explain in private one-on-one SAT tutoring.

3. “How is your preparation built for the digital, adaptive SAT specifically?”

The SAT is now section-adaptive: first-module performance sets the scoring ceiling for the section. Preparation that has been retrofitted from older paper-test strategy trains the wrong instincts for a test where early questions carry routing consequences. A current answer will reference the module structure and what it implies for pacing and error cost, not just “we use official practice tests.”

4. “What do your results actually look like, and from what starting point?”

A score-gain claim is meaningless without a starting point. “Average improvement of X points from a starting average near Y” is a real claim. “Students get great scores” is not. Ask specifically how gains are measured and over what timeframe, and be skeptical of any number presented without a baseline.

5. “When would you tell us tutoring is not the right thing?”

This is the integrity question. A provider who will never say “your child does not need this” or “the real issue here is organization, not content, so coaching would serve you better than test prep” is a provider whose recommendation cannot be fully trusted, because it has no off position. The honest answer names a scenario in which they would decline the work or redirect you. We address that distinction directly in academic coaching versus tutoring.

What the Answers Reveal

Across all five, one axis separates strong providers from weak ones: precision versus volume. Strong providers individualize based on diagnosis, maintain continuity, build for the actual current test, substantiate results against a baseline, and have a defined point at which they would decline. Weak providers run a standardized program, treat instructor assignment as interchangeable, generalize about results, and have no scenario in which they say no. The price is frequently similar. The expected outcome is not.
